frequently asked questions

Why should I hire a birth photographer?  I have family that can take the photos.

They can & should take photos!  But, there are a million other things that you will need them for also.  This is one of the biggest life events that you will have.  Hiring an experienced birth photographer frees up your family and partner to enjoy it, support you, and not worry about “missing the moments”.  It also allows you AND your partner to be in the photographs!

When should I book our birth session with you?

As soon as possible.  As soon as you can confirm pregnancy with your healthcare provider, you can book your session.  Otherwise, contact me and I will see if I have availability.  Since birth sessions are an “on-call” situation, I only book a limited number of sessions.  So please reserve your date as soon as you can!

Do I need to discuss with my doctor that I would like to hire a birth photographer?

YES!!  It is your responsibility to make sure your doctor and hospital know and will allow photography during your labor and delivery.  You will also need to ask and make sure if c-section is required, will the photographer be allowed in the OR.  Some allow the photographer in the OR and some do not.  Please ask in advance about their policies.  If I am not allowed in the OR, I will continue photographing the scene while we are waiting!

When my labor starts, when should I call you?

Please call me immediately!  You can also just text me, but if you don’t get a quick response, please call me.  EVEN AT 2AM or you think it may be a false alarm!  Making sure I am well informed (you won’t bug me, promise!) allows me time to get my things together and tie up anything I may be busy with at the moment.

When will you come to the hospital to start photographing & how long do you stay after the birth?

I will come to your birth once your healthcare provider determines you are in active labor.  I try to get there when you are between 6-7 cm dilated, day or night.  I will continue photographing for up to an hour after the delivery.

Do you use flash?

No, I do not.  I am a lover of natural & available light.  Due to the low light situations, sometimes the images may have a little grain in them.  I embrace the grain & love it.  It’s the nature of low light photography!

Will my images be in black & white or in color?

I edit all the images in black and white.  Again, due to the low (and unpredictable) light situation, it is best suited as black and white.  Plus, the event itself really lends itself well to moody black and white photography!

I’m nervous “too much” will be photographed!

No worries!  I have a questionnaire that I will have you fill out regarding your birth plan when you pay your deposit that does ask how much is “too much”.  Never will I photograph from the “doctor’s point-of-view”, but you can definitely discuss with me what/how you feel most comfortable with being photographed.

How long does it take before my photos are ready?

It typically takes 2-3 weeks before your images are ready.  Once finished, your photos will be mailed to you on a USB flash drive.

Do you offer a payment plan?

A $200 deposit is due in order to book your session.  You can then pay the balance as you wish, but the remaining fee must be paid in full by 4 weeks before your due date.
